Changing your tyres isn't just a seasonal formality. It's also the perfect opportunity to thoroughly assess their condition. Here's a complete checklist to help you ensure your summer tyres are 100% ready to get back on the road safely.

Check the condition of your tyres each time you mount them.

1. Sculpture depth

The tread pattern is the design carved into the tyre that ensures water evacuation and grip.

  • Legal minimum in Luxembourg: 1.6 mm

  • Recommended: ≥ 3 mm for good grip, especially in the rain

🔍 Tip: Use a 2€ coin or a specific measuring tape to check the depth.

2. Visual condition of the tyres

Carefully inspect your tyres to spot:

  • Cracks or fissures: a sign of aging rubber

  • Deformities (bumps): often related to an impact

  • Foreign objects (nail, screw, etc.): to be removed immediately

⚠️ A damaged tyre = risk of puncture or burst at high speed.

3. Date of manufacture (DOT)

The DOT code is written on the sidewall of the tyre (e.g., DOT 0420 = 4th week of 2020).

  • More than 6 years? Rubber ages even without being driven on.

  • Between 6 and 10 years old: to be closely monitored

đź“… An old tyre loses flexibility, therefore grip and safety.

4. Tyre pressure

Incorrect tyre pressure impairs road handling and increases fuel consumption.

  • Check the tyre pressure when cold (before driving).

  • Refer to the manufacturer's recommendations (indicated on the door or in the manual).

  • Adjust according to the vehicle's load (holidays, full trunk, etc.)

5. Balancing and parallelism

  • 📉 Balancing prevents vibrations in the steering wheel or uneven wear

  • 🔎 Wheel alignment (or geometry) ensures proper wheel alignment

6. TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems)

Modern vehicles are equipped with TPMS sensors that indicate tyre pressure on the dashboard.

  • If an error message appears: the system must be reset.

  • Some sensors need to be reprogrammed each time the wheels are changed.
