Found a screw or nail stuck in your tyre? Don't worry, it doesn't necessarily mean you have to replace it. In many cases, tyre repair is possible, effective, and long-lasting. But it all depends on the type of damage. Here's everything you need to know if you're considering a repair.
1. Can a flat tyre always be repaired?
No. Tyre repair is only possible if several conditions are met:
The damage is located on the tread, that is, the central part of the tyre that is in contact with the road.
→ The tread is neither the sidewall (the side of the tyre), nor the area near the wheel.
The diameter of the perforation is less than or equal to 6 mm.
There was no flat tyre: driving with a completely deflated tyre often damages the inside of the tyre, making it irreparable.
The tyre shows no visible tears or deformations on the sidewalls.
⚠️ Passenger car tyres are most commonly affected by this type of repair. For commercial vehicles, SUVs, or motorcycles, the repair also depends on the tyre type and its construction.
2. How Alpha Pneus repairs a flat tyre
At Alpha Pneus, we follow a safe and professional method:
Tyre removal: to access the inside and check for damage not visible from the outside.
Thorough inspection: to rule out any structural damage.
Cleaning and preparation of the damaged area.
Application of a PRP patch (also called mushroom patch): this device is inserted from inside the tyre and fills the puncture, ensuring sealing and strength.
Cold vulcanization: this is a process which allows the patch to be permanently fixed without heating the tyre, in order to preserve its structure.
Reassembly, balancing and final check.
✅ You leave with a safe, tested tyre that meets the standards.
3. Why avoid "plugs"?
The "plugs" are a type of rubber or gum cord that is inserted directly into the puncture without removing the tyre.
They can be useful in emergency situations, but are not a safe long-term solution.
No internal checks are performed, so it is unknown whether the tyre structure is damaged.
They do not comply with recommended safety standards.
⚠️ At Alpha Pneus, we do not use plugs, because the safety of our customers comes first.
4. How much does it cost? And how long does it last?
A repair is often cheaper than replacing a tyre: between €33 and €48 excluding VAT depending on the type of tyre.
The intervention time is quick: 30 to 45 minutes on average.
A well-done repair can last until the tyre wears down normally.
However, in most cases, a single tyre can only be repaired once.
Conclusion
A flat tyre isn't always a disaster! With the right reflexes and a trusted professional, tyre repair is often possible, economical, and long-lasting.
